EJF Capital LLC (“EJF”) was founded in 2005 by former principals of Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group, Inc. (“FBR”) a diversified investment bank, broker-dealer and asset management firm specializing in the banking, financials and real estate sectors.  EJF is headquartered outside of Washington, DC and manages over $5B across both credit and equity strategies with a focus on event driven opportunities within banking and financials. The firm employs 60 professionals across three offices globally (Washington DC, London, and Shenzhen, China).

The EJF Financial Services Fund (“the Fund”) is a fundamentally driven equity long/short strategy which leverages the collective experience of EJF’s seasoned investment team and co-founder, Manny Friedman, within the banking and financials sectors.  The Fund seeks to benefit from the changing regulatory landscape within the financial services industry due to the new regulations that have emerged from the 2008 global financial crisis, including Dodd-Frank and Basel III.  The Fund utilizes EJF’s extensive industry knowledge and expertise to analyze the impacts of these changes on various sectors and companies within the financial services industry.

The Fund employs a catalyst-driven approach, taking advantage of regulatory changes under Basel III and Dodd Frank legislation which we believe are transforming large banks into ”utilities”. The Fund targets growth opportunities in specialty finance companies and community banks, as well as consolidation and M&A situations within community banks.  The Fund invests primarily in:

  • TARP-driven equity recapitalizations of U.S. community banks
  • Mutual-to-stock conversions of U.S. community banks
  • Specialty Finance or “shadow banking”, including consumer and commercial finance

EJF’s ability to execute the strategy is driven by its capital markets and specialty finance transaction experience and enhanced by its substantial long-term relationships with corporate management teams and deep understanding of their financial institutions.  The Fund is managed by Jason Ruggiero, a Partner at EJF, who joined FBR in 1999 as an equity trader and worked closely with Mr. Friedman as a portfolio manager at FBR before joining EJF at its inception.  EJF’s co-founder, Manny Friedman, has over 40 years of experience in the U.S. securities industry with a particular expertise in banks and financials, and spent more than 15 years as the Co-Chairman and Co-CEO of FBR, after co-founding the company in 1989.
